Jakarta – Fusilatnews – Social media has been buzzing with a viral video showing a group of Indonesian nationals in Japan forming a gang and causing unrest among the local population. The video, which has garnered widespread attention, shows several Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) engaging in activities considered disruptive to public order in several major cities in Japan. This situation has sparked a strong response from various parties, including Junico BP Siahaan, a member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), who has called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) to take immediate action.
“We urge Kemlu to investigate the video of the ‘Indonesian gang’ in the streets of Japan, and if the information is accurate, to address it promptly to prevent further damage to Indonesia’s reputation internationally,” Junico BP Siahaan stated in a press release on Tuesday (3/9/2024).
Junico added that this incident should be taken seriously as it could tarnish Indonesia’s image as a country known for its disciplined and high-integrity workforce. “Such behavior does not reflect the character of the Indonesian people, who are known for their friendliness and respect for other countries’ cultures. Therefore, it is essential for Kemlu to coordinate with Indonesian diplomatic representatives in Japan to resolve this issue quickly and appropriately,” he continued.
Government Response and Coordination Efforts with Japan
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to the DPR’s request by announcing that it will coordinate further with the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Tokyo and the Consulate General in Osaka. Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Teuku Faizasyah, emphasized that the ministry would investigate the authenticity of the video and take necessary actions.
“We will verify this information with relevant parties in Japan, including local security authorities, to ensure that the rights of Indonesian nationals are protected while also ensuring they do not engage in activities that harm other citizens,” explained Teuku Faizasyah.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has urged all Indonesians in Japan to respect local laws and norms. The Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, Heri Akhmadi, stated that Indonesian representatives in Japan continue to monitor the situation and are prepared to provide consular assistance if needed.
Reactions from Japanese Residents and Potential Impact on Bilateral Relations
This phenomenon has drawn serious attention from Japanese media and citizens. Several local media outlets have reported on residents’ concerns about the gangs, reportedly consisting of Indonesians, engaging in illegal street racing, public disturbances, and other actions considered disruptive to community peace.
Some Japanese citizens have also expressed their frustration on social media, describing the group’s behavior as disrespectful and contrary to Japan’s rules. “We hope the Indonesian government takes this issue seriously, as such behavior creates discomfort and fear among residents,” wrote a Japanese netizen on Twitter.
International relations analysts warn that if this issue is not promptly addressed, it could potentially harm bilateral relations between Indonesia and Japan. As one of the main destination countries for Indonesian migrant workers, Japan expects high levels of discipline and decorum from foreign workers residing in their country.
Preventive Measures and Education for Indonesian Migrant Workers
In response to this incident, several parties in Indonesia have suggested further educational and coaching efforts for migrant workers planning to work abroad, particularly regarding cultural understanding and the laws of their destination country. The government is also expected to be more proactive in ensuring that Indonesians abroad do not engage in activities that violate local laws or norms.
The Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker) has also pledged to provide more comprehensive training for prospective migrant workers before they depart for their destination countries. “We will enhance pre-departure training programs to ensure that our migrant workers fully understand their responsibilities and ethical conduct while working abroad,” said an official from Kemnaker.
This case is expected to serve as a lesson for all Indonesians living abroad to always uphold the nation’s good name by respecting the laws and cultures of their host countries.
