A. Introduction to AOTS Onsite & Online Program (Subsidized Program)
—————————————————————————
Applications to the following programs are now open! Please check our website for more details.
1. Online programs for African countries subject to Japan’s ODA [Language:English]
- Series of practical online training courses with live online lectures & e-learning for Africa on “Essential Skills for Data Analysis and Machine Learning” A series of online training courses are being planned for Africa, aimed at helping participants to acquire the data science skills and data engineering skills needed to derive data-driven solutions to Africa’s most pressing challenges. Each course consists of two live online lectures and 30 days of hands-on e-learning, requiring an average of 2-3 hours per day.
The first two courses are also very useful for those who just need data analysis in their business, while this online training series will ultimately lead to acquisition of the basic skills needed to become an AI engineer.
Application to participate in the 1st and 2nd courses is now open!
- Course 1: Beginning Data Analysis with Python [ORAF12]
Duration: from 2 November, 2022 to 1 December, 2022
Live Online Lecture 1: 2 November, 2022, 08:30AM-10:00AM (UTC/GMT)
Live Online Lecture 2: 22 November, 2022, 08:30AM-10:00AM (UTC/GMT) - Course 2: Exploratory Data Analysis [ORAF13]

B. Becoming a professional in Bolted Joints (Nuts and Bolts)
—————————————————————————
Public accreditation systems are well established in many countries and global standards such as ISO exist which help ensure sufficient training of welding personnel. On the other hand, the development of engineers specializing in bolted joint design and installation is left to the voluntary and individual efforts of each company or organization.
In my opinion, I think this is a significant problem, considering that bolted joints are one of the most fundamental and core technologies, appearing in almost all machinery and structural engineering around us.
A great deal of knowledge is required when designing what type of bolt and nut to use for the joint and when determining what installation approach to use to tension the bolt. Nuts and bolts may seem simple, but many different elements and procedures are required to ensure an integral connection between the metal components.
For example, the intrinsic nature of a bolted joint is in its friction. When a bolted joint is tightened, a force known as torque is applied to overcome the friction. However oppositely, after installation, it is the friction that prevents the joint from coming undone, preventing any further movement.
When a bolted joint is subjected to heat, it stretches or shrinks, changing the tension in the bolt. Also, vibration weakens the joint causing small slips on the surface which overcome the friction eventually loosening it. Metal fatigue can occur from cyclic loading which can be a resultant of either cyclic thermal stresses and strains or cyclic vibrations. Loosening and metal fatigue can cause bolts to fall off machinery and structural members, leading to serious accidents in some cases, so engineers involved in this aspect must be well versed in this field.
Thus,it can be said that the training of engineers involved with screws is a major challenge for world-wide manufacturing. In Japan, an organization called “The Japan Research Institute for Screw Threads and Fastener” has recently started a system to train excellent engineers in bolted joints through a two-year specialized curriculum at various universities and educational institutions.
As a subsidized initiative supported by AOTS, HARDLOCK Industry Co.,Ltd, together with lecturers from Tokyo Metropolitan University, plan to conduct a 3-day online seminar on bolted joint technology for Egyptian corporations in November, with the cooperation of the AOTS Alumni Society-Egypt (https://www.aotsegypt.com/).
