Mataram, NTB, Fusilatnews – The Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) Police have named a man with a physical disability, identified by his initials IWAS, as a suspect in a sexual harassment case involving 15 victims. IWAS underwent an additional examination at the NTB Regional Police Headquarters on Monday (9/11/2024).
“Yes, today we scheduled a follow-up examination for the suspect named Agus (IWAS),” said NTB Police’s Director of General Criminal Investigations, Commissioner Syarif Hidayat, in Mataram, as reported by Antara.
Syarif confirmed that the suspect attended the examination with legal counsel. The interrogation, which began on Monday morning, is still ongoing.
“The suspect’s new attorney has submitted a formal power of attorney for representation. Since the lawyer is new, the examination is incomplete,” Syarif stated.
Attention to Disability Rights
The police ensured that the suspect’s rights as a person with a disability were fully respected during the investigation process.
Regarding IWAS’s house arrest status, Syarif clarified that the police have no immediate plans to convert it to detention in a correctional facility.
“The house arrest decision reflects our consideration for the suspect’s rights since we do not yet have detention facilities equipped for individuals with disabilities. Therefore, his house arrest has been extended for an additional 40 days,” Syarif explained.
Growing Number of Victims
According to the NTB Provincial Disability Commission, the number of victims in this case has risen to 15. However, Syarif emphasized that the investigation focuses on the victims whose statements have already been included in the case files submitted to the prosecutor.
“At this stage, we are concentrating on the initial case report, which involves five victims, including the complainant. Two additional victims, including a child, have provided statements, but these are not yet part of the primary investigation,” Syarif added.
Legal Basis and Charges
IWAS faces charges under Article 6(c) of Law No. 12 of 2022 on Sexual Violence Crimes (TPKS). This law underscores the seriousness of sexual violence and ensures justice for victims.
The case highlights the challenges of ensuring legal accountability while addressing the specific needs of individuals with disabilities. It also underscores the importance of safeguarding victims’ rights and ensuring due process for suspects.
