3) Insight: Becoming a professional in Bolted Joints (Nuts and Bolts)
—————————————————————————
From the first half of the 17th century to the mid-19th century, Japan was closed to the rest of the world (Sakoku – a policy that restricted exchange and trade with foreign countries). As a result, Japan lagged far behind Western Europe in Science and Technology. In 1860, shortly after the opening of Japan to the outside world, the Tokugawa Shogunate (Military Government of Japan during the Edo period) sent diplomats to the United States to exchange instruments of ratification for the “Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation”. Kozukenosuke Oguri, one of the diplomats, was amazed at the craftmanship and engineering of the shipyards in Washington. He realized Japan’s technology was far behind that of the western world. “Our country needs to learn how to manufacture these brilliant devices” he whispered to himself, bringing one of the threaded devices (“bolts”) back with him to Japan. Legend has it that the rapid growth of Japan’s industrial sector started from here.
In fact, as Japan’s fastening technology advances, Japanese industrial sector has seen significant growth and development. In recent years, world-class anti-loosening devices such as the HARDLOCK Nut that were developed in Japan are leading to new advances.
Engineering of bolted joints is a complex and difficult subject. Even today, experts still believe that the subject remains largely in the dark. Although Japan along with Germany are global leaders in bolting technology, In recent years there has been a decreased focus on bolted joints by an increasing number of universities who teach to our younger generations. Furthermore, in many countries, efforts to train engineers to be capable of addressing issues related to bolted joints are far from satisfactory.
With this in mind, we have decided to hold a seminar on thread fastening technology in Egypt, November for engineers for a wide range of industries.
