Thoughts on the Management Philosophy of Various Japanese Companies – August 2023
At those companies which continue to receive praise for their excellence around the world, there is a unique, strongly held management philosophy, which creates a distinctive corporate culture that they maintain. In Japan, typical examples include the cultures fostered by Panasonic founder Konosuke Matsushita and Kyocera’s Kazuo Inamori. Among SMEs and companies in the growth phase, there are also many examples like Hardlock Industry, whose philosophy is the “spirit of altruism.”
The spirit of “Coexistence and co-prosperity” lies at the heart of the management style put into practice by Matsushita. He believed the company was a public institution and that it was important for society as a whole and all stakeholders to flourish as a result of its activities.
At the time when Panasonic still had only around 160 employees, Matsushita presented the management principle known as the “Tap Water Philosophy.” He declared that as a producer, it is the mission of the company to supply valuable goods to the world at practically no cost, like tap water, thereby eliminating poverty from society. After that, even during major recessions and the like, Panasonic has implemented measures and reforms that it deemed to be right, even if they were difficult, in order to realize “Coexistence and co-prosperity” for all stakeholders, including customers, employees, agents, and suppliers. Not only did this help the company overcome management crises, but it also led to significant growth.
This approach means that the company rejects management that wrongfully makes undue profits or dreams of getting rich quick, instead continuing to work hard to address customers’ needs and pursuing rightful profits. Matsushita’s approach subsequently influenced many managers in Japan.
Furthermore, his management philosophy also resonated with managers abroad. As a result, it became the driving force to grow his company into a global company.
Matsushita said, “In managing a business, there are many individually important factors, such as technical capabilities, sales capabilities, financial capabilities, and people, but the most fundamental is the right management philosophy. If you have this as a base, you can truly begin to leverage people and technology and capital, and on the other hand, it is easier for these to be developed at companies which have the right management philosophy in place.”
To be continued in the next edition.
